Paul Hill

Paul Leland Hill is an Ann Arbor-based bass-baritone from hometown Clinton, Utah. Paul has long been a choral enthusiast travelling to Israel and Hong Kong with the Salt Lake Vocal Artists under the direction of Dr. Brady Allred from 2009 to 2016. He also sings with the Detroit Opera chorus and sang for 4 seasons with the Utah Opera Chorus. Upcoming engagements include Ralph Vaughn Williams Five Mystic Songs, and Bartok's Bluebeard's Castle. Recent engagements include Cadmus/Somnus in Handel's Semele and Witch 3 in Navarro's Working for the Macbeths at the University of Michigan, covering Leporello and the Commendatore for Teatro Nuovo's Il Don Giovanni and singing in the inaugural season of Light Opera Lab. Paul performed Figaro with University of Michigan's SMTD production of Mozart's Le nozze di Figaro, and Escamillo in their production of La tragedie de Carmen.

Known for his warm voice and comedic timing, he apprenticed at Sarasota Opera in 2020 and returned for the 23 - 25 seasons as a studio artist singing the Imperial commissioner in Madama Butterfly. Paul was a company member at Utah Festival Opera for their ’22 and ’23 season stepping in for the role of Mr. Maraczek in She Loves Me and as the Herald in Wagner's Lohengrin. Other recent roles include Pistola in Verdi's Falstaff, Don Magnifico in Rossini’s La cenerentola, and Sarastro in Mozart’s The Magic Flute. Paul graduated with a Masters of Music in Vocal Performance at the University of Michigan in May 2022. While at UM, he appeared as the Sodbuster in Missy Mazzoli’s Proving Up, Don Pasquale in Donizetti’s Don Pasquale, and Pandolphe in Massenet’s Cendrillon. With an undergraduate degree in Piano Performance, Paul continues to play for, coach, and teach young singers in addition to pursuing his operatic singing career.
