Matthew Cook

BA Music, Phd Geography

Matthew Cook, PhD, is Associate Professor of Historic Preservation & Cultural Geography at Eastern Michigan University. Though his main career is in academia, he works as a professional singer frequently and holds a BA in Music from EMU in addition to his several other degrees (he has been accused of being a degree collector). Over the last several years, Dr. Cook has sung with ensembles including the Oregon Bach Festival Chorus, Toledo Opera Chorus, Mariner’s Church of Detroit, Detroit Concert Choir, Beyond Choir (Ypsilanti), Vox GR (Grand Rapids), Choral Artists of Michigan, and the Baroque on Beaver Festival (Beaver Island). Recent solo work: Mozart’s Coronation Mass, Vesperae solennes de Confessore, and Regina Coeli; Bach’s Es ist das Heil uns kommen her; Marianna Martines’s Dixit Dominus. Recent roles: Tamino (Mozart’s The Magic Flute) with EMU Opera Workshop; the chorus Marine in South Pacific with Toledo Opera; Penn Holder in The Gold Bug (Victor Herbert, album recording) and Guido in The Bride Elect (Sousa) with Ann Arbor Comic Opera Guild; Cherubino/Antonio/Basilio in an abridged Le Nozze di Figaro (Mozart) at Baroque on Beaver.
